Wolsingham town centre

Wolsingham is one of the main towns in Weardale, with a good selection of shops, pubs and cafes and the local library. Wikipedia notes that “it is a Saxon settlement and one of the first market towns in County Durham, deriving its name from Waelsingas, or Sons of Wael, an ancient Saxon family that once lived there.”

There are some fascinating buildings, the oldest (apart from the church) being Whitfield Place on Front Street. The more recent industrial past, of the Weardale Iron compoany ironworks has gone and the village is much as it was before then.
