Shopping in Weardale

Food Shopping

Rookhope does have its own shop, though it is only open mornings and has a limited range of essentials – there is a list of opening times in the visitor folder in the Cottage. The nearest shops apart from the one in the village are Coop stores in Westgate or Stanhope, along with a Greengrocer and other shops. There are also small supermarkets in Alston and Allendale on the way across from Tynedale.

If you want to do a supermarket shop on the way to Rookhope rather than bringing all from home, then:

  • from the A1M, then there are a Sainsbury’s,  ASDA and others on an out of town site in St Helen’s Auckland on the main road through.
  • If you are arriving via the M6, Penrith has Booths, Coop, Morrisons and Aldi all very near the junction itself.

You can also order your shopping online to be delivered to your holiday cottage, though bear in mind some of the supermarkets don’t deliver on Saturday afternoons or Sundays. There is a list on the Online Shopping page.

We can provide a fuller list of useful shops when you have made your booking. Once your supplies are in, just enjoy the tranquility of life up in the Pennines!
